The biggest airport can also be defined by square kilometerage.

Taking into account the first 3 criterion, the biggest airports in the world are Atlantic International Airport; for most aircraft movements and most passengers, Memphis International Airport; for largest volume of cargo, and London-Heathrow; for number of international travelers. Memphis is the worldwide headquarters of Federal Express, accounting for the enormous amount of cargo flowing through its gates. London Heathrow may have more international passengers than any other airport in the world, but for sheer number of passengers, Atlanta and Chicago O’Hare have it beat. O’Hare had 76 million passengers pass through its doors in 2006.

The largest airport by sheer size was the King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia at 780 square kilometers! It seems curious that this airport is so large, as it only serves just over 2 million passengers. Its grounds include a mosque, a nursery and the Royal Terminal; dedicated to monarchs and heads of states. Just over 200,000 square meters is dedicated to the nursery alone; a lush green oasis in the middle of the desert.

Beijing International Airport, in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics has just completed its Gigantic Dragon Terminal, bringing the entire complex to approximately 1300 square kilometers.

The biggest building in the world by height is the Taipei 101 at 508 meters high and 101 stories. If there are any acrophobics out there looking for exposure therapy, this would be the building to ride the elevator in; only 37 seconds to the 87th or 91st floor at almost 17 meters per second! The 101st floor is home to a private club called Summit 101. I was unable to track down any information about this club, but it is fun to think up lots of conspiracy theories about what could be going on up there: alien experimentation, secret society meetings, or a giant Cthuluian monster in front of a 1000 line switchboard forwarding calls to other galaxies. I digress. The building is owned by the Taipei Financial Center Corporation, but managed by a firm out of Chicago. Obviously many firms have offices in this monolith, including a couple that most people are familiar with; Starbucks and ING Direct.

Of particular note about 101 are the design features that incorporate Fung Shui principles. Starting at the top is a giant torch that has a different color for each day of the week; a symbolism of people’s connection to one another and to the sky. 101 also has one of its corners on a T-junction known to drain Ch’i from a building and the people within. Outside this entrance is a fountain; water is said to generate positive Ch’I to counteract the T-junction.

Taipei is a hotspot for typhoons and earthquakes, so Taipei 101 is built using innovative techniques to make it one of the most stable buildings in the world. At its foundation are 380 piles reaching 80 meters into the earth. During 101′s construction, an earthquake of 6.8 in magnitude hit Taipei and the building sustained no structural damage. 101 also has the one of the largest tuned mass dampers in the world; a ball and pendulum design that serves to counteract powerful winds, earthquakes and mechanical motion generated en masse by the 1000s of people moving between its floors.

Some naysayers out there may think that the Burj Dubai is taller than the Taipei 101. They are right. The Burj Dubai surpassed the height of the 101 in 2007, but since it is not scheduled to be completed until 2009, it is technically not classified as a building yet according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The powers that decide these things base “tallest” on 4 different categories (no answer is ever just simple is it?): height to the structural top including spires , but not antennas or flagpoles, height to the highest occupied floor, height to the top of the roof, and height to the top of the antenna. No matter which way you slice it, it isn’t the size of your building that counts, but the length of the pointy bit on the top.

An honorable mention should be made to address area and volume in terms of biggest. The Boeing factory in Washington State is the biggest by volume; usable space at 13.3 million cubic meters, and the Aalsmeer Flower Auction in the Netherlands is the biggest by area at 990,000 square meters; evidently, airplanes are taller than flowers.

It has 7 theme zones dedicated to different parts of the world including Amsterdam, Paris, Caribbean, California, Rome, Venice and Egypt. It has the capacity for 1500 stores, but much of its space goes empty because it is located in the suburbs of Dongguan and is only accessible by car.

The next largest mall is also in China; the Golden Resources Mall in Beijing. It is 680,000 square meters total with 560,000 meters of leasable space. Like the South China Mall, it has been experiencing a limited success for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is located near the Fourth Ring Road in Beijing, an area that most tourists don’t frequent. Secondly, even if a tourist were to make their way to the mall, many of the stores don’t accept foreign credit cards. Lastly, many of the things sold in the mall are outside the disposable income bracket of many Chinese citizens. Clearly, China is trying to cater to a growing middle class; the infrastructure is coming into place, now it just needs the people to catch up.

Some of the biggest malls in the United States include the King of Prussia Mall near Philadelphia which ranks 15th on the list of the world’s largest malls at 259,000 square meters of leasable space, the Mall of America in Minnesota with 257,000 square meters of leasable space and the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California at 250,000 square meters of leasable space.

Archeologists believe that it was built for Fourth Dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu and was completed in 2560 BC. The pyramid has lost its outer casing of highly polished stones with the rough hewn stones remaining. The casings were shaken loose from the structure in 1301 AD. The pieces that fell were used to build mosques and other buildings in Cairo that are still there today. Some of the casings remain at the site as a testament to the great craftsmanship that went into building this giant.

What is truly marvelous about this building is the precise math involved in its construction. The foundation is only one minute (1 degree = 60 minutes). The four sides are perfectly aligned with true North, South, East and West. The ground at the base is flat to within 15 millimeters. What is truly amazing is that although the Egyptians didn’t know the value of π, they used the number in their calculations because the height and width of each side’s proportions are to within a 0.05% margin from 2π.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only remaining structure of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Just in case you are curious, the other six wonders are The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Most of them were destroyed by earthquakes.

It is a multiuse facility that was completed on May 1, 1989. Many Communist rallies are held there and a gigantic birthday celebration for Kim Jong-il’s 60th birthday in 2002, which was one of the few public events in North Korea to allow foreigners to attend. U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright was entertained at the May Day Stadium upon her visit in 2000. She was the highest ranking U.S. official ever to visit North Korea.

If, in your world, a stadium doesn’t need a roof, then the world’s largest sports venue is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At full capacity, including the infield, this venue can hold up to 400,000 people. That’s a lot of race fans! It was opened on August 12, 1909, and obviously is mainly concerned with car racing, but it hosted the opening ceremonies for the Pan American Games in 1987.
