It takes 2 to 3 minutes to cook a soft boiled egg; the kind good for dipping toast in. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to make a hardboiled egg; the kind good for making into sandwiches.
First, place an egg in a saucepan and fill the saucepan with enough water to sufficiently cover the egg. On medium heat, bring the water to a boil, and then reduce the heat. The timing starts at this point; that is, time your 2 to 3 minutes from the time you reduce the heat.
